ICE Currently Holds 22,886 Immigrants in Detention, Alternatives to Detention Growth Increases to nearly 300,000
(26 Jul 2022) According to the latest data released by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the agency held 22,886 immigrants in detention on July 17, 2022. Of these, 16,539 were arrested by Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The number of immigrants in detention who were arrested by ICE has been growing since the start of the year, from under 5,000 to 6,347 currently. The majority of detained immigrants—69 percent—do not have a criminal record.

ICE's Alternatives to Detention program continues to see record-high numbers, now with 296,250 immigrants monitored by the agency. SmartLINK, which now makes up the vast majority of technology used to monitor immigrants, is used to monitor 241,614 people in total. ICE's regional offices in Texas—specifically San Antonio and Harlingen—have higher ATD dockets than anywhere else in the country, with nearly 100,000 total immigrants on ATD between the two of them.

Highlights from data updated in TRAC's Quick Fact tool show that:

  • Immigration and Customs Enforcement held 22,886 in ICE detention according to data current as of July 17, 2022.
  • 16,539 out of 22,886—or 72.3%—held in ICE detention have no criminal record, according to data current as of July 17, 2022. Many more have only minor offenses, including traffic violations.
  • ICE relied on detention facilities in Texas to house the most people during FY 2022, according to data current as of July 11, 2022.
  • ICE arrested 5,040 and CBP arrested 16,442 of the 21,482 people booked into detention by ICE during June 2022.
  • Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, Georgia held the largest number of ICE detainees so far in FY 2022, averaging 1,098 per day (as of July 11, 2022).
  • ICE Alternatives to Detention (ATD) programs are currently monitoring 296,250 families and single individuals, according to data current as of July 16, 2022.
  • San Antonio's area office has highest number of people in ICE's Alternatives to Detention (ATD) monitoring programs, according to data current as of July 16, 2022.
