TRAC Report on Immigration Enforcement
(24 Aug 2005) TRAC Report on Immigration Enforcement was released on August 24, 2005. Prosecution of immigration cases have surged sharply higher between FY 2003 and FY 2004, but typical sentences slumped. The decline in sentences imposed on immigration violators appeared to be related to changes in the kinds of cases being sought by federal agencies rather than the discretionary decisions of the judges. The authoritative Justice Department data — backed up in part with information from the courts — show considerable variation in the enforcement trends in different parts of the country, with a massive jump in one judicial district.
