According to enforcement data provided TRAC by the Justice Department, the percentage of cases referred for prosecution by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) that resulted in a conviction increased to 62% in FY 2007, up from just 46.2% five years ago.
The data further show wide variation among 90 federal judicial districts. In 2007, 88% of ATF referrals in Kansas resulted in a guilty verdict, compared with only 25.5% in Nevada. The district with the greatest percentage increase in ATF guilty verdicts over five years is New Jersey, which rose to 69.4% in 2007, up from 17% in 2003.
