Hearing on Securing the Border: Building on the Progress Made
By Doris Meissner, Director, U.S. Immigration Policy Program, Migration Policy Institute

From a high of more than 1.6 million in FY 2000, apprehensions fell to 463,382 in FY 2010, the lowest level since the early 1970s -- when large-scale illegal immigration to the United States began in earnest -- and less than half the number as recently as 2006 (citing Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse).
