The Effect of a Prosecutor's Gender on Federal Prosecutorial Decision Making and Area of Practice: Annual Meeting of the Western Political Science Association; Portland, OR
By Todd Lochner and Dorie E. Apollonio

In this paper, we conducted a preliminary analysis of how gender affects federal prosecutorial decision making. Using data provided by the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC), we examined all matters referred to federal prosecutors by federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies in fiscal year 2008. We sought to determine how many assistant U.S. attorneys were female, where they practiced, whether their practice areas differed from their male counterparts, and whether they were more likely to prosecute particular types of crimes. Given the findings of other researchers, we hypothesized that there will be limited (if any) gender effects in either the area of practice or the probability of filing criminal charges.......[citing TRAC research]
