After 9/11, A New Era In The Business Of Detaining Immigrants

Over time, local and state law enforcement agencies have also been brought into the fold, entering into agreements with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency to seek out immigration violators independently. Yet while government rhetoric has focused on detaining and deporting immigrants as a means to ensure public safety, the majority of those detained from 2005 through 2009 had no criminal convictions, according to data compiled by the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University.
