Report: El Paso Immigration Judges Deny 83 Pct. of Asylum Requests
By ABQnews Staff

Immigration judges in El Paso denied 83.3 percent of all political asylum cases they ruled on since 2006, according to a recently published report by a Syracuse University data research organization. The Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse last week published 265 individual profiles on immigration judges who had decided on at least 100 political asylum cases over the past five years, the El Paso Times reported. El Paso Immigration Court Judge Thomas C. Roepke rejected 96.7 percent of all applications during that timespan, denying 148 applications while approving just five, giving him the third highest rejection rate in the nation, according to the TRAC report. Nearly half the applications reviewed by Roepke were from Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemale, the report said.
