Judge's Seeming Bias Helps Asylum-Seeker At 5th Circ.
By Jennifer Doherty

Nationally, the denial rate for asylum claims was 66.7% between 2015 and 2020, according to data compiled by the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University. The denial rate for all immigration judges at Oakdale was 86.4% during the same period. Comparing Judge Reese to all 526 immigration judges who issued at least 100 decisions in the last five years, her record is especially stark. "If judges were ranked from 1 to 526 — where 1 represented the highest denial percent and 526 represented the lowest — Judge Reese here receives a rank of 2," TRAC reported. Only Houston Immigration Judge Bruce Imbacuan ranked higher, having denied all the 105 asylum cases he decided on the merits during that period.
