Latest trends in federal criminal prosecutions – illegal reentry prosecutions up, while nonimmigration prosecutions decline


Segment features TRAC reports “Illegal Reentry Becomes Top Criminal Charge” and “Federal Criminal Enforcement and Staffing: How Do the Obama and Bush Administrations Compare.” One quarter of all federal criminal prosecutions during the first six months of FY 2011 charged illegal reentry under Title 8, Section 1326 of the United States Code. … Trends over the past twenty years show how prosecutions for this statute now continue to top level of prosecutions under previous administrations. Emphasis on immigration enforcement also has led to declines in the prosecution of other types of non-immigration federal crimes in districts outside the southwest border.
