For the first time in U.S. history, the trials of immigrants prosecuted for illegal reentry into the USA exceeded the number of illegal immigrants prosecuted for attempting to enter the country without documents for the first time. During the first six months of this fiscal year, 18.552 people were imprisoned for illegal reentry to the U.S., according to a report released this week by TRAC, a program of Syracuse University in New York. TRAC analysis indicate that nearly all undocumented reentry arrests (98%) were conducted by Border Patrol agents, who recorded the other hand, since 2007, a sharp drop in the number of arrests of migrants attempting to cross first once the border. "The volume of arrests for readmission is huge, we are witnessing a historic change," recalls Susan Long, co-director of TRAC. To continue the same pace, by the end of fiscal 2011, the volume could reach 37.104 trials, a 3.5% increase over FY 2010 when the total number of processes was 35.836.
