El Paso to receive first asylum seekers as Biden cracks open door to certain migrants
By Lauren Villagran

There are some 10,800 people with active Migrant Protection Protocol cases in the El Paso federal immigration court, according to the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University, which compiles federal immigration data. The Biden administration has tried to make clear in numerous public messages that the border remains closed to other asylum seekers. The public health protocol known as Title 42 is still in effect, allowing Border Patrol to quickly turn back to Mexico migrants who cross without authorization, even to claim asylum.
