Deportation defense fund for immigrants is about to launch in the city of Dallas
By Dianne Solis

Immigrants facing deportation in the civil system don’t have the right to a public defender if they can’t afford a lawyer. Immigrants in the U.S. unlawfully are subject to deportation, but so are legal immigrants who commit certain offenses. The nation’s civil immigration courts are facing a historic backlog of about 1.1 million cases. In the busy Dallas immigration courts, only about a third of immigrants have had legal representation, according to the Syracuse University-based research nonprofit known as Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, or TRAC.
