New immigration court opens in Manhattan; some attorneys cite lack of transparency
By Monsy Alvarado

There are more than 60 immigration courts throughout the United States staffed by 430 judges. Immigration judges are employees of the Justice Department, part of the executive branch, rather than part of the judicial branch. Nationwide there were 930,311 pending immigration cases as of June 30, 2019, an all-time high, according to the Executive Office for Immigration Review. In New York, there were 122,857 pending cases through July 2019, according to figures compiled by Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse or TRAC, a non-partisan research center at Syracuse University.
