Sisters facing deportation receive one-year reprieve

How many pending cases involve the possibility of breaking up families is impossible to quantify, Leopold said. Yet the number appears to be high, based on data from the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University. The number of cases awaiting resolution in federal immigration courts reached an all-time high of 267,752 at the end of 2010, a 33 percent increase since 2008, causing the average wait to get from filing to hearing to grow to 15 months.
