By Monsy Alvarado

A total of 30,179 asylum cases were decided by immigration courts last year, with 61.8 percent of applicants being denied asylum, according to data released last year and compiled by the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, or TRAC, a nonpartisan research group based at Syracuse University. The percentage of rejections represented a spike of 17.3 percentage points from 2012, when federal immigration judges denied 44.5 percent of asylum applications.
