Immigration Court Backlog Tops 1 Million
By Charlotte Cuthbertson

On average, it currently takes around 565 days for a case to be completed, according to data collected by Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) at Syracuse University. Ten years ago, in fiscal year 2008, it took less than half that, at an average of 231 days to complete a case. The time it takes for a case to be determined also varies depending on whether the individual is in a detention facility or not. For example, in Imperial, Calif., the cases of non-detained individuals take an average of 1,490 days (four years) to complete, compared with 114 days for those who are detained, according to TRAC.
