Since immigration proceedings are civil in nature, indigent asylum-seekers do not benefit from an appointed attorney. The consequences are enormous. Pro se asylum-seekers are almost five times less likely to be successful in immigration court than asylum-seekers who have the benefit of legal representation.......[Citing TRAC research].
