Chaotic year in immigration policy challenges Chicago
By Jeff Coen

The Executive Office for Immigration Review said the exact figures still are being finalized, but the office provided a number of detainee cases to the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University. At the end of fiscal year 2017, some 1,940 people were detained in the Chicago area, up from 1,669 at the end of the prior year. Most of them are of Mexican descent, the statistics show. Earlier this year, the growing number of those in custody led ICE to issue a request for information from potential contractors who could provide more lockup space in Chicago, as well as in Detroit, St. Paul, Minn., and Salt Lake City.
