Mexican officer's bid to escape drug war, gain asylum to be heard today in Dallas
By Dianne Solis

In fiscal 2010, asylum applications from Mexicans before immigration judges jumped to nearly 3,800, up about 35 percent from the year earlier and the highest level in five years. But less than 2 percent of those who in 2010 applied ultimately were granted asylum, according to information obtained after Freedom of Information Act requests by Syracuse University's Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse.
