Deportation games: Whose side is Sheriff Scott Jones on?

CE agents used detainers indiscriminately to collect immigrants who faced minor infractions and, often, had yet to be formally charged with any crime at all. Despite promised reforms, there are signs they’re still being misused. According to Syracuse University’s Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, for instance, only 19 percent of the nearly 8,000 detainers that ICE issued as recently as April concerned someone with a felony conviction. “Fully two-thirds had no criminal conviction of any type,” the nonpartisan data-research organization found.
