Eyes front With Arizona immigration law on appeal, Texas should focus on other issues.


Despite the ramped-up rhetoric, the federal government is doing a much better job of detaining and deporting those here illegally, focusing on those who commit crimes. A study by the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University found that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has deported nearly 280,000 aliens in the past nine months, 10 percent more than were expelled in the last year of the Bush administration. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano predicts the figure by year's end will top 400,000. More than half of those deported have criminal records other than immigration violations, a reflection of a new priority by the Obama administration on removing dangerous alien
