The federal government reported 6,305 new immigration prosecutions during May, down 10.9 percent from April, according to data analyzed by the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University.
Over the past five years, immigration prosecutions are down more than 13 percent.
That said, the volume of immigration deportation – and the population of detention centers – remains brisk. As of May, the backlog of cases in immigration court was 449,001, including more than 89,000 in California.
