Antiterror tactic is assailed, defended Detainees held without charges
By Maria Sacchetti

“Their public face is that they’re using immigration as a tool of law enforcement and say they’re really going after the worst of the worst,’’ said a staff attorney for the ACLU of Massachusetts. “But in reality, they’re deporting increasing numbers of people’’ who have not been convicted of crimes.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is detaining more people on immigration violations as an enforcement tool to fight terrorism after the September 11 terrorist attacks but Maria Sacchetti interviews government officials, other think tanks and queries TRAC data and finds that the number of detainees that are being deported without any convictions have nearly doubled from Fiscal Years 2005-2009.
