Immigrant detained on purpose to learn stories
By Serena Maria Daniels

The Obama administration also advised the Department of Homeland Security to use prosecutorial discretion in 2011, meaning ICE would focus efforts deporting serial immigration law offenders and immigrants with criminal records. Since then, about 6,000 immigrants have been deported from Michigan, according to Syracuse University-based Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse. The research project gathers government data from numerous agencies. Of the more than 300,000 cases nationally placed under review in immigration courts for consideration under prosecutorial discretion, fewer than 19,000 have been closed as of April 30, TRAC data shows. In Detroit, about 2,700 cases were reviewed but only 300 — or about 11 percent — were closed under prosecutorial discretion. An estimated 100,000 immigrants are living illegally in Michigan.
